Some Spectacular Jets
Radio galaxies can have incredibly large jets that escape from the galaxy itself and penetrate many thousands of parsecs into the surrounding space. Here are a couple of examples:
3C31 radio image to left (From A. Bridle, http://www.cv.nrao.edu/~abridle/3c31.htm) to right, the radio image (in red) is superimposed on an optical one (in blue) that shows the galaxy surrounding the active nucleus http://www.cv.nrao.edu/~abridle/dragnparts.htm |
Cygnus A (From Carilli and Barthel, http://nedwww.ipac.caltech.edu/level5/Carilli/Car2_1.html) |

Radio (red) on optical for Cygnus A. The galaxy is the large fuzzy image in the center; the rest of the objects are stars in our own galaxy. |
