What he doesn't know (and his mother and Dr. Flicker certainly do not help!) is that the expansion is only on a very large scale, outside the local group (which is about a million parsecs in diameter), so there will be no effects from the expansion in Brooklyn. In fact, even though it is not happening, if the Milky Way were expanding away from us, it would probably not have any effect on life on Earth, now that the Earth and life have formed.
