Procedures
Unless an exception has been made specifically, electronic devices such as laptops, netbooks, ipads, etc. etc. should not be used when we are lecturing or discussing in this course. Exceptions may be granted if they are needed for an aspect of the material being covered, or for individuals who need to use these devices to as part of their class participation. Class participation will be judged largely on responses using smartphones, so be sure to bring yours to class every day.
The professor expects students to turn in work that they themselves have done. talking to others and getting help is encouraged, but it is imperative that you follow the Academtic Code of Integrity.
Students with Disabilities
If you anticipate barriers related to the format or requirements of this course, please meet with the professor so that we can discuss ways to ensure your full participation in the course. If you determine that disability-related accommodations are necessary, please register with Disability Resources (621-3268; drc.arizona.edu) and notify the professor of your eligibility for reasonable accommodations. We can then plan how best to coordinate your accommodations.
Honor Students
Some of you are taking the course for Honor's credit. You will take the same exams as the other students but for some of the homework assignments there will be additional work for you. You will also have to complete a project that will result in paper --details to be distributed later in the course.
Grading
This course has three hourly exams, on days indicated in the syllabus and in the usual lecture hall. There is a final exam at the time set by the university for finals, given the class meeting time, again in the usual lecture hall. Half of the final will cover material discussed after the third hourly exam and half will be comprehensive over the entire course. For the exams, you need to bring picture identification or we will not accept your answer sheet. Once we start an exam, you cannot leave the room without turning in the exam as your final effort.
Each hourly exam is worth 100 points and the final is worth 200 points. At the time of the final, you can retake an exam covering the same material as one of the hourly exams to raise your grade; we will only count the exam of the two that has the higher score. This lets you erase one of the hourly exams from your grade, if you did poorly on it (or missed it).
Class participation will count for 200 points of your grade. It will be evaluated on the basis of your responding to questions posed to the class, using your clicker. We will also be giving assignments that will usually be due a week after they are assigned and these assignments all together will be another 200 points. In summary, the grade for the course will be based on 900 points:
hourly exam 1: 100 points
hourly exam 2: 100 points
hourly exam 3: 100 points
final exam: 200 points
class participation: 200 points
homework: 200 points [Note that these may total to a larger value than 200 ponts and so in effect you will get some extra credit]
