Not literally, probably, but scientists are greatly concerned about the recent collapse of ice shelves in the Antarctic and the potential if the trend continues for a large rise in ocean levels. Predictions are that levels could easily rise over the next century by 15 feet, inundating many coastal areas such as most of southern Florida. "This animation was recorded by NASA's MODIS satellite sensor. It shows the Larsen B ice shelf and parts of the Antarctic Peninsula . The first scene from January 31, 2002 shows the shelf in late austral summer with dark bluish melt ponds dotting its surface. In the next two scenes minor retreat takes place during which time several of the melt ponds well away from the ice front drain through new cracks within the shelf. The main collapse happened between March 5 and 7." - from Space.com, http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/planetearth/ice_shelf_020320.html |

This image depicts the average extent of
Arctic sea ice this September. At 4.67 million square kilometers, the area
was nearly a record low. The pink outline indicates the long-term average
since 1979 for September coverage. The rapid reduction in the arctic ice cap
is apparent. From Science News, October 3, 2008 http://www.sciencenews.org/view/home
